Potamia valley -an impressive hiking path
In the characteristics of the Naxian nature with the vastly changing landscape, besides the remarkable plains, the mountainous landscape (with marble deposits and emery in its subsoil), the white and picturesque villages, you also meet the small but stunning valleys flown by small but beautiful rivers with the invigorating water which creates an important sense of relaxation and recreation. The path in the green valley of Potamia Naxos is one of the most impressive routes of the island. Starting from Pano Potamia (and its source) and marching along the configured pedestrian path, you can cross a large (and typical) part of the valley and with minor exceptions, passing by the medium village (Messeo Horio) and the beautiful little village of Lierado, you arrive in Kato Potamia, admiring (during the route) the lush vegetation and the river water, which gives life to the nature that produces delicious fruits (lemons-oranges, other fruits, aromatic plants, etc.) and (in the past) put in motion many water mills. One of them (Mr. Yiannis Drili's) reconstructed, is near Pano Potamia and you can visit it. In the whole valley there are also Byzantine and newer picturesque churches, towers, tower-houses, water mills. From Potamia (in a distance of a few kilometers) you can visit historical places (as Pano Castro (=Upper Castle), the ancient marble Kouroi, Kalamitsia: a former Jesuits summer palace, Byzantine St. Mamas' Church etc.). |
