NAXOS CARNIVAL FEASTS 2017

As every year  so during this carnival period 2017 the Greek island of Naxos is living in another atmosphere of joy and mirth. Pictures of its life full of tradition, filled with new types of events. Customs that have their origin in the distant past and mythical history, customs connected with Zeus and Dionysus, Ariadne particularly worshiped in Naxos. This year a new ritual (inspired from mythology) entitled "Neptune and Amphitrite on Naxos" (to be held on Friday, February 24, 2017 at 9.00 in the evening in Hora, the town) is added together with the previous successful events and gives a new boost, a new dynamic to the events.

The events also included:

* Torch, Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 7 pm in the town (Hora)

* The great Carnival parade Sunday, February 26, 2017 at 11 am in Naxos town

In villages oh the island other events that keep many traditional customs there:

* Music and traditional event "Koudounati" (men bearing pastoral bells on their folklore costumes) in Filoti Tsiknopepmti 16 February 2017 with traditional music (with the instruments "tsampounotoumpaka") and island dance 

* Event "Koudounati" in Apiranthos Sunday, February 26, 2017

* Events with "Kordelati" (men wearing traditional costumes with ribbons) in several villages Sunday, February 26, 2017

On Ash Monday: The celebration continues ...

Ash ("Clean") Monday ("Kathara Deftera" in Greek) February 27, 2017 in Naxos the revelry is being continued unabated, with Lenten Naxian dishes, traditional events, flying a kite, local music and dance. Events are held in most villages like Sangri, Filoti, Agios Prokopis, Apiranthos and Kinidaros.

In Filoti,  again a very interesting feast with "Koudounati" on Monday ("Kathara Deftera")

IMPORTANT ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCHES  ON THE ISLAND

Neanderthals were in Naxos? 

Neanderthals were in Naxos? Quite possibly, as shown by new research in Stelida of Naxos, located on the hill northwest of the island, in a developed tourist area, three kilometers from the town ...

The research, launched in 2013 by the Canadian Institute, in collaboration with the Archaeological Cyclades unearthed numerous objects which attest to the appearance of early humans in the region as before 260,000 years.

The vast majority of the findings identified in the surface archaeological research in 2013 took the form of chipped stone (flint), and found a small amount of emery (material that abounds on the island, although not in Stelida) and even smaller amounts of marble, also there Naxos. The pottery collected was very rare and the majority of it much later. His interest in research, which will continue as the new five-year program got the "green light" by the Central Archaeological Council, is the dating of the finds, which changes the prehistoric data in Cyclades.

Until recently, experts believed that human activity on the islands began much later, around the 5th millennium BC, while only 1981, with the discovery of the location in Stelida, appeared timidly the possibility of an earlier dating.

The new research program, the address of which will be Dr. Dimitris Athanasoulis, Head of Antiquities Cyclades and head from side Canadian Institute in Greece will be Professor Tristan Carter has multiple goals. One of them is the dating site using scientific techniques in order to clarify when early humans migrated to Europe via Aegean basin if migration was made with navigation. Also, there will be detailed typological analysis of artifacts and explore the behavioral relationships (quarrying and manufacturing of equipment) of early humans in the area, ie the Neanderthals and Homo sapiens.
